GSK Laboratories Ltd is to sell Augmentin in the US in the US market at a price of Rs 7,000 (Rs 12,000) per tablet.
GlaxoSmithKline said it has launched a new anti-infective medicine to treat the common gout infection caused by the fungus Proteus mirabilis.
The drug has been launched as part of a broader study to evaluate its efficacy in treating the gout, a common bacterial infection in the US.
The company said the new drug, Augmentin, was developed in collaboration with a team of scientists from the University of Michigan's School of Medicine and the University of Southern California, where the drug has been studied.
"Augmentin is a highly effective treatment for the symptoms of gout that are associated with the consumption of alcohol or a combination of two medications," the company said in a release.
GSK's new product, Augmentin Injection, is one of the new treatments for patients with gout that is not being used in the US.
It was originally developed as an oral medication for the treatment of severe acute renal failure (SARF), but the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently granted approval for the use of Augmentin to treat patients with gout.
